Paraphrasing:
Golf is so expensive. First you have to buy clubs, then practice buckets, and then pay for the rounds themselves. It’s pushing out the common person.
Meanwhile over in car-hobby town, you have people of every race, gender, and creed shoveling money hand over fist to participate.
Bucket of balls? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW EXPENSIVE A SITUATION LIKE THIS IS

Trick question: a cracked block isn’t worth much over scrap. Oh, right, a
new
block.

Too much power through a Windsor block I think

Golf is as expensive as you want to make it, kind of like cars. Not everyone needs to play with the latest and greatest Callaway or Taylor Made clubs. Golf balls can be picked up cheap, and practice buckets really aren’t that expensive (although it does depend on the range).
Green fees can be expensive but this varies widely from course to course; in my area it’s not unheard of to be able to play 18 holes for around 30 bucks, and double that if you’re going to a much nicer course.
Every sport has a cost of entry and a cost to play, so I don't see what the problem is.

are they discussing it like the price of golf has gone up suddenly? What kind of hobbies are these people doing that are so cheap?

Literally anything else besides maybe skiing, yachting, and motorsports, lol

Eh, most hobbies get pretty expensive the more you get into it, but you can get a cheap set of used clubs and go hit some balls around for at a cheap course for a reasonable price. Most hobbies I can think of have at least the cost of entry of a used set of clubs except for maybe running, and tennis I guess?

That looks broken.

Golfer, can confirm golf is expensive, but pales in comparison to cars. I live in what is arguably the golf capital of the United States, so I have a ton of choice. I have $250 invested in TWO SETS of clubs. The trick is to buy them used. Going to the range, aka practice buckets, are about $5 for 35-50 balls. I can play a round of 18 with cart for $25-$35. The round itself is probably the biggest expense, if you look at it from a per-round basis. The next, for me anyway, being golf balls. I am a terrible golfer, so I lose a lot of balls (tehe). I buy junk balls as often as I can because buying good ones for 2-3$ per ball is not economical.

The lowest barriers to entry I can think of would be running, tennis, soccer, hiking, bicycling, swimming (depending on location I guess), cooking, maybe powerlifting, frisbee golf, potentially DIY hair/nails (makeup gets way expensive very quickly), hula hooping, and couponing.
But I’m really not a fan of golf and grew up seeing people drop crazy money on that kind of stuff in Long Island so idk.

Any hobby can get expensive depending on what you do. Exercising is cheap, unless you have to buy gear and supplements. Then if you want to compete that’s $$$, etc.
The thing with motorsports is that you can go from, say, a nice $35 T&T plus fuel day to HOLY CRAP I’M OUT 8 GRAND in no time flat.

haha couponing. Bicycling isn’t really cheaper than golf to get into, unless you want to have a bad time, or you are just going for short rides I guess. Bikes are expensive these days. I have a similar feeling about golf, but I have played a couple times due to social obligations, and it was pretty cheap.

Jezebel writers can’t comprehend hobbies costing anything because they get “the boys” to pay for everything they do...

That is not the way to go with this discussion. Trust me.

a lot of other hobbies are like that too, except its usually you breaking yourself instead of your vehicle, I suppose there’s a nontrivial risk of that with cars too....

For $10 I can get a large bucket (100 balls) at any of the 4 local driving ranges around me. You can get used clubs for cheap, or just buy a set once and be done with it. Golf really is not expensive, I’ve spent more on a myriad of other “hobbies”.

I forgot I was talking to a serious bicyclist :) you’re right, I was mainly going by the fact that it’s a cheap form of transportation for a lot of people.

Same here.
My clubs are of pretty good quality and were $75 used.

I have a pretty new driver that I got new on sale for about $250, then the rest of my clubs were bought for under $100 used. Got a nice titleist bag from Costco for $99 and I'm all set. Could've gone waaaay cheaper if I was patient enough to shop around.
![]() 04/01/2016 at 11:49 |

My driver was 39.99 on sale, brand new. RAM FTW! Never use it, just sits in the bag. I did splurge on my clubs but I won’t need another set probably ever. They are ten years old now and still going strong.

Indeed, I have seen a few 347 block splitters in my day. It makes me wonder if there is a certain harmonic rpm that causes the block to fracture
![]() 04/01/2016 at 12:08 |
|
It’s not harmonics. There just isn’t enough meat in the 302 block above the main bearings. They start to crack in and above the mains as low as 300hp.. 400-500hp and you better have a Dart block or you’re in for a heartbreak because it’s just a matter of time.

A better way to say it is that jez writers are so busy dumpster diving to survive in the city, that they don’t have the time and money for hobbies outside of being angry

Disc golf is the cheapest sport I’ve ever participated in. Even going to a gym is more expensive (clothes, membership, etc). A basic set of discs is like $15-20 and I’ve yet to encounter a course that charges a fee. Even if you were super crazy serious about it, you’re probably going to peak out at a few hundred dollars a year. Even exotic discs are really cheap.
Once you get serious about most of these, they get expensive...
![]() 04/01/2016 at 13:23 |

R/C is also expensive, especially if you do anything beyond club racing or if you get into flying.

Are the 351W blocks expensive?
![]() 04/01/2016 at 18:21 |
|
That's a steal! There are always great deals on brand new year old clubs. Honestly I don't golf VERY often so I expect to get many years of use out of my current clubs.
![]() 04/02/2016 at 13:31 |
|
$2000-2500 for an aftermarket block. 351 blocks are a bit different though, if you go back to an early block they can handle more than the newer ones. I’ve heard the 1969 and 70 blocks are the best.

So speaking of, I just picked up this #vintage Schwinn to get my dog over his bicycle hate:
Looked it up on eBay and apparently these suckers go for $300+ restored!

Nice! Yeah, people pay a lot for those old bikes! Restoring them is really easy if you are used to working on cars too If you need any info on old bike stuff, this site is great: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/
